Hammam & Wellness

The Right Hammam for You

Istanbul has around forty historic hammams, and most visitors pick whichever one shows up first in search. Some are beautifully restored and quietly overrun by tour groups by 11am. Some are the real, unglamorous neighbourhood version locals still use on a Tuesday. We ask which one you actually want before we book either.

Why it's hard to choose

A five-star review means nothing when it's written by someone who's never been to a second hammam to compare it against. The historic ones vary hugely in how rushed the scrub feels once you're inside — and that detail never makes it into a listing.

What we arrange

  • A slot before the tour groups arrive, or the quiet after-hours booking
  • The neighbourhood hammam, if you want the one with no gift shop
  • A private couples session where that's genuinely available (most historic hammams don't offer it — we know which do)
  • A masseuse who won't rush the last ten minutes

Two ways to do this

Historic & refined

Centuries-old marble, restored well, a slower and more polished ritual.

Authentic neighbourhood

Where the neighbourhood still goes. No robe photos on Instagram, and that's the point.

Know before you go

  • — Traditional hammams separate men and women, except at the few historic ones with private suites
  • — Bring nothing — towels, slippers, and the kese glove are provided
  • — Skip a heavy meal beforehand
